How To Go About Preparing & Moving A Plant  

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION #1.  Before you can remove any advanced plant or mature tree growing on your property, you will need to check your Local Council's - Tree Preservation Order. Your local council's Tree Preservation / Parks & Gardens Officer will let you know whether it is Ok to remove or prune any plants growing on your property and what environmental considerations you may need to adhere to.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION #2.  Trade A Plant encourages plant owners to enlist the services of a Professional Horticultural Service / Tree Transplanting Company to relocate your plants. They can inform the owner about the plant's viability for relocation & any environmental considerations to be aware of to minimize the risk of spreading plant weeds, pests and diseases, in addition to pointing out any plant laws and regulations which may apply in your state. 1. Select plant to be moved, treat any pests or diseases.
Prune 1/3 of foliage off,  maintain overall appearance of plant
Liquid fertilise and water well for 2 weeks prior to move.

2. Pre-dig new hole before any moving occurs.
Match new positions (sun/shade) ratios with current situations.

3. Dig trench right around base of plant - wide enough to dig up a mix of both soil & roots (not just roots - otherwise you are digging too close to the trunk).
Now dig in under the root ball to undermine any tap roots. - To assist in 'cracking' the root ball, tie a rope as high up the plant as possible and pull plant over.
Whenever any contact with rope & branches/trunk occurs, use soft cloth as padding for protection.

4. Once out of the ground, wrap root ball with damp hessian cloth immediately and tie up to hold together.
Lift into barrow or onto truck.
Tie all palm fronds up tight with rope or cover all foliage plants with more damp hessian to prevent wind burn.
Take straight to new hole - keep root ball constantly moist.

5. Plant immediately in new hole and backfill with good quality soil.
Tie plant to steady against wind movement by using 3 guy lines to form triangle bracing system.
Use garden hose for protection where guy ropes contact trunk.

6. Fertilise lightly and water frequently for at least the next 6-12 months to encourage healthy re-establishment and reduce stress.
Check for poor drainage and raise plant up if sitting in water.

7. After 6 months untie all guy lines, maintain regular watering and admire your incredible achievement.

Tree Preservation & Your Local Council Requirements

Local Council approval for the removal or pruning of some mature plants may be required. Below is a copy of North Sydney Council's Tree Preservation Order which can be found on their Enquiries web page by clicking on North Sydney Council's - Other Questions. Please check with your Local Council for similar Tree Preservation Orders that may apply in your area before you start any tree work.

A Tree Preservation Order is in place in North Sydney. This means that residents must obtain permission to cut down or prune certain types of trees. The reason we need the order is to protect and retain trees which are important to our local area.

 Council may approve requests from the public to prune trees on public land to improve sunlight or views where this pruning would not affect the health or integrity of the tree or adversely affect the public in any way.

The following actions are prohibited unless a Council permit is obtained beforehand. The ringbarking, cutting down, topping, lopping, removing, injuring or wilful destruction of:

• any palm tree, conifer, fig, angophera, cycad or tree fern of whatever size

• any tree on public land

• any other tree having a height or canopy spread of 10m or a trunk circumference of 1.5m measured one metre from the ground.

Council consent is not required for the removal of the following trees:

• Rubber trees

• Privet trees (broadleaf, fineleaf, variegated or golden)

Branches overhanging public footpaths and roadways from private property must be pruned back to the property boundary to a height of 2.4m (8ft). To notify Council of locations where property owners are not maintaining this clearance please phone Council during normal business hours. Council will then send out a notice to the owner of the property requesting that pruning be carried out.

To obtain a permit or other advice about trees, an appointment for an inspection must be made. Inspections are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays and can be arranged by phoning Council during normal business hours.
