Celebrity Gardener Of The Month

Floriade 2008 - Canberra, Australia  www.canberratourism.com.au  Hotline. 1800 020 140.

Our feature garden of the month is Floriade 2008, located in Canberra's Commonwealth Park. Derived from the Latin 'floriat', meaning 'to design with flowers', Floriade blooms each year during the spring months of September & October. Drawing its inspiration from European floral displays such as Holland's famous Keukenhof, it is now entering its second decade and has established itself as one of Australia's premier spring flower festivals. Set on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin, the gardens of Floriade herald the new season with their hyacinths, daffodils, poppies, violas, English daisies and over 300,000 glorious tulips of varying colours. For anyone who has ever dreamed of walking through open fields of spectacular tulips in full flower or laying back under the shade of a magnificent Oak tree and just watching the world go by, then this is the garden for you. Wander through changing garden themes such as The Enchanted Garden which will spark your imagination and capture your heart. Congratulations to Floriade for being Trade A Plant Feature Garden of the Month. For information on Floriade and how to get there, call the Information Hotline. 1800 020 140.  Email canberra.tourism@act.gov.au

Leo Schofield - Sydney, Australia  Bronte House website: www.brontehouse.com

Bronte House - Sydney

Leo Schofield

Our celebrity gardener of the month is Sydney Festival Director & columnist, Leo Schofield. Renowned for his hectic work  schedule and tireless enthusiasm for design and culture, it is little wonder that Leo turns to his garden for tranquillity and balance. Since taking on the lease of Waverley Council's historic Bronte House in 1995, Leo has transformed the 150 year old garden into a breathtaking mix of bold colour and form. The value of soil improvement prior to any planting, developing borders of herbaceous perennials inter-mixed with colourful annuals, as well as combining plants with contrasting form are all techniques that Leo uses successfully in his garden.

You can't help but be inspired by Leo's open and passionate knowledge of plants, the arts, good design and style. A visit to Bronte House on any open day will allow you to see first hand what good garden planning combined with hard work and drive can achieve in a relatively short space of time. Leo enjoys taking his laptop computer into the garden to write his weekly Sunday Telegraph Schofield column.

Congratulations to Leo Schofield for being Trade A Plant Celebrity Gardener of the Month. Opening dates for Bronte House can be obtained from Waverley Council. Telephone (02) 9369 8000. Web Address: www.waverley.nsw.gov.au    or Bronte House website: www.brontehouse.com
